  • Working With Modifiers
  • Working With Animation Keys
  • Working With Materials
  • Saving Objects

See below for a more detailed guide to the topics...

DVD TOPIC DETAILS:
  • Arrays and Object Sets - introduces the user to the concept of Arrays as lists for storing massive amounts of various values and to the system object sets for accessing scene objects by categories. Discusses the power of FOR loops in conjunction with arrays and object sets. Also includes an introduction to Boolean logic and operations related to filtering arrays.
  • Working with Object Sets - demonstrates how to select, deselect, hide, unhide etc. groups of objects using system object sets.
  • Filtering Object Sets - Expands on the previous topics by showing how to collect scene objects based on their class, various base object and modifiers' properties and the presence of certain modifiers. Also introduces the user to the potential of error traps in command line scripting.
  • Working With General Node Properties - continues the ideas from the previous topic by showing how to collect scene objects by general node properties like material, position, scale etc.
  • Filtering By Mesh Properties - introduces the user to the mesh properties of geometry objects and provides ideas for filtering based on mesh properties like face count etc. Demonstrates some practical pitfalls and workarounds when filtering geometry classes.
  • Mass Changing Properties - after showing how to find objects by existing properties, this chapter shows how to change properties in large numbers of objects to new values.
  • Randomizing Properties, Renaming Objects - continues the topic of changing properties, but this time using random values. Then shows how to automatically assign unique names to objects based on their properties.
  • Attack of the Instanced Clones - takes a closer look at the amazing capabilities of the Instancing and Referencing system of 3ds max and the unique implications of these features in conjunction with MAXScript and massive amounts of objects.
  • Working With Modifiers - demonstrates approaches to add, delete, change, enable and disable conditionally large numbers of modifiers while using the knowledge from previous chapters about collecting objects by different properties.
  • Working With Animation Keys - introduces the user to the base animation capabilities of MAXScript and demonstrates how to manipulate the new or existing keyframed animations to achieve random or sequential animated effects. As a side topic, shows the potential of MAXScript to create custom object grids similar to the ones generated by the Array tool.
  • Working With Materials - shows how to create new materials, generate random colors, assign materials to objects and the material editor slots, access materials from the material editor and apply to a large number of scene objects. Also expands on the capabilities of MAXScript to replace the Array tool for custom object grids.
  • Saving Objects - demonstrates the MAXScript features related to saving groups of objects to separate MAX files, including saving every object to a separate MAX file. Also includes examples of scene file name and path access, directory creation and browsing, exporting selected objects to any supported 3rd party format and importing multiple files to a single scene.
MAX Scene Files on the DVD
Originally, the DVD was recorded using the shipping build of 3ds max 7. This means that all scene files were created and used in 7. But CG Academy's policy is to ship the DVDs with files compatible with 3ds max 6, and the content on the DVD is so fundamental that it would work in any 3ds max version since release 2!

Once again, MAXScript came to the rescue! All original files have been translated COMPLETELY (including procedural objects and modifiers, cameras, lights, materials, keyframe animation, viewport layouts etc.) using the free BFF script found on Boboland (with few slight additions of some more object space modifiers)!

Because the BFF script can work in all versions from 3 to 7, the scenes were loaded and saved from 3ds max 5, which means that any user of 3ds max 5, 6 or 7 could load them and easily recreate all steps shown in the DVD lessons!

Do I need a Credit Card to purchase a DVD from CG Academy?
Some people asked on the support forums whether they can order the DVDs from CG Academy without using a credit card.

THE ORIGINAL ANNOUNCEMENT ON BOBOLAND FRONT PAGE

The long-awaited CG Academy Fundamentals DVD "MAXScript For The Masses" has been released!

After seven years of sharing knowledge and providing free tools to the 3ds max community, I can finally demonstrate to you the amazing power of MAXScript in the privacy of your home with this 100% practice oriented learning DVD!

This DVD is not about teaching you how to become a professsional programmer (although it would help if that is your goal). It provides the fundamental knowledge ANY 3ds max user should posses in order to communicate his will to the 3D software in the most effective way possible. In a way, the DVD teaches you the "native language" of the 3ds max user interface and puts you into the position of the master that can take control over large scenes with ease. Everything on this DVD is related to controlling potentially massive amounts of objects and properties in the simplest way possible, while at the same time enhancing your knowledge of both MAXScript and 3ds max. The power of even the simplest scripts can be tremendous - in fact, the practical examples you will witness consist typically of a single line of code!

If you are the owner of a 3D business, get this DVD for your employees - it will potentially save them huge amounts of time when peforming repetitive, boring and tedious tasks, increase their productivity and leave them more time for creativity, thus saving you lots of money!

You can order the DVD from the CG Academy's web store.
You can also order both the Introduction To MAXScript DVD by my good friend and colleague Laszlo Sebo and the MAXScript For The Masses DVD by yours truly in a boxed set to save on shipping costs!
