Q: Ever since I saw an advertisement on a magazine, this program keeps bugging me.. how do you make a cutted open coco nut? (half), It'll have to able to see the insides too (those white things). Somehow I just cannot think of a way.. *sigh*, and this is really bothering me, wondering if anybody got any thoughts?

A: I can think of two ways:

I hope we are still talking about 3DS Classic (although these steps would work in MAX, too)

  • Create the shape of 1/4 coconut in the Shaper, and rotate it as you would create a vase or a cup - SurfRev in Lofter and Voila!

    or

  • Create two concentric spheres. Flip the normals of the inner sphere. Attach them to build one object. Cut the half using a big box and Booleans. It would be a good idea to assign a white material to the inner sphere and a brown to the outer before cutting...

The first way gives you more control over the coconut shape and I would prefer it...

    Addition:

  • Create two Hemispheres and Substract the one from the other using Booleans...
  • The picture above was created using two 1/4 shapes - one for the outside and one for the white core.
