Q: I have downloaded a whole fleet of spacecraft from Star Wars in 3DS format. These are all incredible models. I have one problem, how do I group all the parts of one spacecraft into one parent object? I have found I can go through each model and attach all parts to one main part on the model (via create/object/attach). This seems to take way too long for a program of this caliber. Is this the only way to do it? I would like to simply drag a Tie fighter around in my scene, rather than go through each individual part and attach it to one main part on the ship (i.e. attach all parts to the laser turret), then drag the model around. I guess this is what I am asking: I start with an empty scene, I load an X-Wing fighter, I want to drag the whole ship around in the scene, but the ship loads as about 15 individual objects. How can I make all parts of the X-Wing fighter into one object?

A: Do the following:

Select all the parts of the ship (make them RED!).
Go to Modify/Object/Move, press SPACEBAR to activate the |SELECTED| button (or click it with the mouse), press SHIFT and left mouse button. You can move the whole selection, or leave where it is - a "CLONE" of the object will be created, and you will be prompted for an object name. The new object will NOT be selected, so you can use Modify/Object/Delete over the last selection set to erase the single parts and leave the new object.
