Outliner

Version:
2.1.5
Date Updated:
09/13/2012

The Outliner 2.0 is a fast and easy to use scene management tool. It has a wide range of features, including selecting, hiding, freezing, linking and grouping objects in the "Hierarchy Mode". In the "Layer Mode" you can organize your scene by dragging&dropping objects from one layer to the other. What's more, the Outliner offers support for nested layers, to manage scenes more efficiently. The interface is nimble enough to keep it open constantly.

Additional Info:

Compared to the previous version (1.6.1), there are many improvements. Most notable among them are: hugely increased performance, improved stability, nested layer support and many small tweaks to improve the ease of use. For a list of all changes, click here

Sorting "Add Selection To" list of layers

Do you mean that the list of layers in the context menu should also be sorted on hidden state, if the tree sorter is set to sort by visibility?
Or does it not sort the layers alphabetically?

Sorting "Add Selection To" list of layers

PJanssen, why Outliner (2.1.4) doesn't respect "SortMode" when display list of layers in "Add Selection To", is it bug?
If this not a bug, can you add this feature?

Drag&drop parenting

Unless I misunderstand what you mean, drag&drop parenting is fully supported. By default it uses the middle mouse-button (quite nice when using a wacom), but you can adjust this in the options if you want.

As a Maya user moving to Max

As a Maya user moving to Max this is a godsend.

Thanks for making this. One thing i LOVE is the ctrl expand (shift expand in Maya).. i used that sooooo much in Maya.

If I had one thing i missed it would be drag re-parenting inside the tool, though i can live without that.

Seriously, really, really great tool.

Interesting idea!

Interesting idea!
Currently Ctrl-clicking on a node icon only modifies that particular node, instead of all nodes in the selection. So it would either have to be alt-click for the entire hierarchy, or the other function would have to move.

Thank you!

PJanssen, Thank you for making this!
Coming from Maya to max, this is a godsend.

one bit of functionality that would be nice in 3.0:

As CTRL Click on the parent's [+] icon expands the whole hierarchy,
It would be cool if CTRL-Click on the freeze or hide icon effected all children too.

But really, beautiful job. Can;t live without it now.

Outliner OpenGL BUG

Hi, Pier Janssen, can you release the Outliner 2.1.5 for 3ds max 2011 and 2012, because the Outliner 2.1.4.1 had an awful memory leak bug when we are working in openGL.
Please, I´ve assumed this is easy to fix, because the Outliner 2.1.5 for 3ds max 2013 in openGL all is working OK.
I´m working in openGL in 3ds max 2011 with animation, because it is at least four times faster than Nitrous or DirectX in shaded mode. (near 50fps with openGL vs12fps with Nitrous in animation)
Thanks.

There currently isn't a "hide/unhide all layers" feature. But it should be very easy to add (for end-users) in version 3.0.
I like the idea of alt-clicking to hide everything else, I'll add that.
