Outliner
The Outliner 2.0 is a fast and easy to use scene management tool. It has a wide range of features, including selecting, hiding, freezing, linking and grouping objects in the "Hierarchy Mode". In the "Layer Mode" you can organize your scene by dragging&dropping objects from one layer to the other. What's more, the Outliner offers support for nested layers, to manage scenes more efficiently. The interface is nimble enough to keep it open constantly.
Compared to the previous version (1.6.1), there are many improvements. Most notable among them are: hugely increased performance, improved stability, nested layer support and many small tweaks to improve the ease of use. For a list of all changes, click here

Outliner 2.1.4.1
I've pushed an update to the Outliner for 3ds Max 2012, which fixes the issues introduced by Product Update 9 and 10. To get the new version (2.1.4.1), use the "check now" update button in the options dialog.

Thanks for testing this; it's good to hear that it seems to be working.
I can't take all the credits for myself though, Larry Minton from Autodesk did the debugging work and provided the idea for the fix. It was expected that PU10 would have fixed the issues, so I would not have had to push an update myself. Now that it turned out that it did not, it was an easy task for me to step in and apply the fix on my side.
Alright! Let the test begin!!!
Hi Pier. Sorry, Havn't checked my mail a few days, but instead every hour I came back here to check the news, and here we go.
Alright!
3ds max 2012 SP2 PU10 (Win7x64)
2 test machines.
Outliner stopped working once I installed PU10.
Now installing your update (2.1.4.1)
- New scene : works ( whoa )
- Reset scene : works stable ( Oh my God )
- Heavily manipulating with scene : works solid stable ( AAAAAAAA! I dont beleive )
- Opening huge scene : rockin stable ( Yeeaaaah!! It woooooorks! )
Tested on both machines. And this is it. You did it!
Man, this was the fastest hotfix in history of software development.
I thought it will take a month, or half a year.
Thank you! Now I can work again. Thank you again for this Great tool!
I sent a new version
I sent a new version (2.1.4.1) to you and some others for testing a few days ago. Did you receive it?
edit: this was directed at psx.
PU10 problem confirmed
Just installed PU10 on fresh 2012 SP2.(Outliner worked perfectly on SP2)
And immediately Outliner began to crash everytime I reset, open, merge, create new object. Does not open for big scenes also.
This is a second machine with same PU10 problem.
Well. I cant do anything but wait for Outliner hotfix or some workaround.
this looks like it's a very
this looks like it's a very common issue introduced by 3ds Max 2012 PU9:

Try installing PU10, and see if that fixes it. If not, send in the crash report and put something like "PU10" in the details field.
Maybe 3ds max problem, but..
Hi. First The Outliner is the great tool, and I use it in production for managing complex scenes with hundred millions of triangles. And it does well. I'm really happy about this tool.
But now one problem appeared. When I reset or open some scene The Outliner crashes with maxscript message
--unknown property: FillTree is undefined
in function Refresh() in core script
So I open it again and it works.
And in some scenes I cannot open it, it crashes instanly.
I reinstalled everything.
Other PC's do not have this problem, so it maybe the max's problem.
What do you think about this.
Maybe some suggestions.
Thanks!
Spline Problem!!!
I am working in 2013 and I am having trouble merging splines into a scene. They are in the Outliner, but are invisible. I made sure they were not hidden. I did a test and placed a material modifier on a spline and then merged it into my scene and it showed up. I collapsed it to an editable spline and merged it and it doesn't show up. Script doesn't like lines/splines. This is an awesome script, outside of this problem. Thanks!
Color tagging is something
Color tagging is something I'm working on for the Outliner 3.0. At this moment I've got a part of it implemented, see this blog post:

More is to come though!
