Outliner

Version:
2.1.5
Date Updated:
09/13/2012

The Outliner 2.0 is a fast and easy to use scene management tool. It has a wide range of features, including selecting, hiding, freezing, linking and grouping objects in the "Hierarchy Mode". In the "Layer Mode" you can organize your scene by dragging&dropping objects from one layer to the other. What's more, the Outliner offers support for nested layers, to manage scenes more efficiently. The interface is nimble enough to keep it open constantly.

Additional Info:

Compared to the previous version (1.6.1), there are many improvements. Most notable among them are: hugely increased performance, improved stability, nested layer support and many small tweaks to improve the ease of use. For a list of all changes, click here

2014 SP1 fixed this.

The max 2014 SP1 just came out and they fixed this error.

I reverted the "fix" mentioned earlier and outliner now works as it should, and it can even dock and everything...

SMFoged, you are so

SMFoged, you are so incredibly awesome! Thanks for the tip here, I've been waiting forever to get outliner working in 2014. The loss of docking is a pain, but nested layers is worth it. Big ups to RickD too for figuring out the issue!

As far as I can tell, this is a Windows 8 & Max 2014 exclusive issue. There doesn't seem to be any problem on 2014 with older versions of Windows, nor is there any problem with Max 2013 on Windows 8. I'm no Maxscript genius either, so I have no idea what the problem is.

FIX (workaround)

I found similarities in this named selection set bug http://area.autodesk.com/forum/autodesk-3ds-max/autodesk-3ds-max--3ds-ma...

RickD has a temporary solution to fix that bug.

This solution works also with Outliner:
Edit the file
"C:\Users\Stephen\AppData\Local\Autodesk\3dsMax\2014 - 64bit\ENU\scripts\outliner\ui.ms"

Comment out the following lines (with two minuses(--)) Like this:

--cui.RegisterDialogBar outliner_main \
--minSize:[mainMinWidth, mainMinHeight] \
--maxSize:[-1,10000] \
--style:#(#cui_dock_vert, #cui_floatable, #cui_handles);

This problem seems to be only on Windows8... Right? And the temp fix breaks outliners docking.

Disclaimer: I know just about nothing about max scripting, but this fix works for me.

3ds Max 2014 crashes

On my laptop Outliner crashes 3ds max 2014. Windows 8 64-bit, Intel integrated graphics 4000, 6 gb ram. Outliner works fine in 3ds Max 2013.

Weirdly enough, it runs fine on my desktop with Windows 7 64-bit, AMD Radeon 5770, 16 gb ram.

I really want to move on to 2014, but I can't live without layer nesting. My laptop is holding me back! Help!
