Similar to some Sketchup's plugin:

It'd be nice to select desired faces\elements (or even objects) then hit the shortcut and click the the edge. The result- UVW gizmo get aligned.

thanks for ideas, I'll try (though PolyUnwrapper is pretty 'heavy weight'. I dreamed about something way more simplistic).

Did you tried TexTools and PolyUnwrapper?
I think that you have to contact with the author of POlyUnwrapper and ask him to put such a tool in his script, because PolyUnwrapper is the tool where this have to be added.
