I'm working as an architectural visualizer at MIR. usually i import files from OBJs. this little script splits the single imprted obj into different parts and gives the new node/object the name of the material it originally had.

Thats what i use it for but it does the same thing for any object with sub-materials.
let me know if theres any problems

Vray Script for randomizing Object IDs and Material IDs

This is a script we use at work. One of the guys modified a script for Mental Ray. It gives random Obj IDs and Mtl IDs to all objects and materials in your scene. Unfortunately as there are a max number of 16 material IDs, that is all you get. Remember to change 'output type' from 'Integer (no AA)' to 'Color (with AA)' to have an anti-aliased pass.

When you run this script you will have no notification or messages, but it will have worked. If you check material IDs and Object IDs you will find they have all changed.

Selecting or applying material ID's with one click!

Rollout with button grid for selecting or setting material ID's of selected polys up to ID 24. Works with editable poly only. Displays selected poly's material ID if they're same.
Ctrl + click add specific IDs. Alt + click deselects specific IDs.

Examples:
Want to set some specific material ID up to 24 to selected polys? One click.
Want to select polys with same material ID's of selected poly? One click.

Material IDs are blank by default. This populates the blank names by copying the names of the current submaterial, ignoring undefined materials and slots that already have names in them.

Written in Max 2016, but should work in all other recent versions as well.
