is there a material count limit for single mesh?

I have a mesh that has about 300 materials, the mesh is stored in a file and I have a script to import it into max, but after importing I can see only 256 materials inside material editor and some meshes seem to have wrong materials.
Is there a material count limit for single mesh? If so can it be fixed?

An other strange thing is, when I am typing msh.material.count, geting the corect number of materials, but in material editor there are only 256 materials, msh stands for the name of the mesh.

How did you add them ? Manually or by script ?

Which version of max do you use ?

As you can read in the first

As you can read in the first post, I use a script.
I really don´t think the version plays any role, since an other guy from my modding team has exact the same problem reading this file with the mentioned script and his max version is different to my.

99

I not sure if there is an official limit of 256 but I experienced render troubles / crashes when sub-object material had more than 99 sub-materials.

Best,
