3ds Max | MCG

Dave Wortley requested this so here it is...how it is intended to be used I do not know so you'll have to ask/wait for Dave to do something with it.

I based my MCG on this if you'd like to see the orig setup.

3ds Max 2016, the second Sample Pack

MCG to select Open Edges or Verts, then you can use the selection to do something in the DCM...like putting some noise on the edges of a leaf..or produce a map that affects only outside edges like transparency.

Video is a little tute on DCM, I didn't include a DCP coz it's way too simple...just do it yourself instead...

If you use Shell on a noisy surface, you'll get self penetrations. Even with Edit Normals, it will not correct it coz Shell uses face normals rather than vertex normals (I think).

This MCG will correct the Shell with a surface that is the same with the underlying geometry, you can do this manually with an Extrude using Group Normals rather than Local Normals. This MCG provides the convenience so you can change the Shell and not having to redo the Extrude.
