IMHO the best way to handle
IMHO the best way to handle this is on the Revit end. It's easy to hide chunks of the model in Revit then export just the visible objects as DWG/FBX. We work with Revit data all the time here and that'd be the approach I'd take.
If you're working with a consultant who is providing the Revit data just ask them to hide all the extraneous stuff (probably mechanical / structural / etc). Then export for you.
