.. I just did a bunch of those trees, and ProOptimizer modifier helped, a lot, although you will tend to loose the branches - but with a thick canopy you don't really even see branches, or if there is a bunch of trees, it just gets lost..
- for ring selections, I think you might get something with dot gap/dot ring ring selection in graphite tools..
- not really random, but still prooptimizer seems like a more viable option, it wil reducae at least 30% without loosing details, 90% if you have a lot of thin branches, but will eat them in the process, the trunks will probably stay almost the same..
