Description

Relink Bitmaps is a script to easily relink all missing files (Bitmaps, VRayMeshes, Mental Ray Proxies, VRayHDRI, IES, etc) when they change directories or when you move computers, check out the short video tutorial below for more detailed information.

Unlike some other scripts of its kind, this is free!  There is a small donation link within the script if you choose to donate, I will remove the nag.  It is a simple licensing system, that does not force you to transfer network cards or be connected to the internet and will work with all versions of Max that are supported by the script.  If you choose to donate I'll be more than happy to license multiple computers as well.

Features:

[*] All 3dsmax supported Bitmap Texture types
[*] (new) Relinks Mental Ray Proxy files
[*] (new) Relinks VRay Proxies (.vrmesh)
[*] (new) Relinks VRayHDRI files
[*] (new) Relinks IES files (including VRayIES files)
[*] (new) Automatically checks for script updates and new versions
[*] 250% speed increase from previous versions
[*] Command-line mode available for automating repetative tasks (see documentation on the website)
[*] Configurable default user options saving button clicks and wasted time

Relink Bitmaps webpage:

https://colinsenner.com/relink-bitmaps/

Supported Max versions: Max 2018+
(Older versions should work, but are not supported moving forward)

Best,
Colin

Additional Info

(Watch the video for more detailed instructions for usage) 1. Run the .mzp file (Self-installing file) 2. In Max goto "Customize -> Customize User Interface -> Toolbars tab -> Category: ColinScripts->Relink Bitmaps" and drag "Relink Bitmaps" to a toolbar, click to run.

Problem with Max 2014

cecofuli · 2023-07-18

Hello, the last orking version in Max 2024 is 2.14.
Version 2.16 freezes 3ds Max.

colinsenner · 2023-08-13

I've updated Relink Bitmaps to 2.17 which fixes the freezing issue 2.16 had.

Issue

locb · 2022-10-25

Hi.
I have problem with 3d max 2023, Vray 6 and relink bitmap 2.16.
RB does not show textures as missing, even though I moved them to another folder.
Maybe the problem is that I'm using a vraybitmap instead of a simple bitmap.

With corona 8 the problem is different, the textures are shown as missing but not relinked.

When i delet RB 2.16 and intall 2.14 everything works good.

colinsenner · 2022-10-26

I'd love to get this fixed for you. Can you please send me a simple test scene that exhibits this problem to my email? You can use the contact page on my site: https://colinsenner.com/contact/

Thanks!

Problem on 2023

albertomaciel · 2022-08-08

Hello! Everybody in our office who upgraded to 2023 and is using Relink Bitmaps is having a problem where the RelinkBitmaps triggers the "missing bitmap" for EVERY SINGLE BITMAP in the scene. Even if the bitmap is in a path added to "external files" in 3ds max. The native 3ds max asset tracker (shift+t), finds the bitmaps (all set as "found") but the relink bitmaps are saying that they're missing. Is there a fix to that? cause we rely a lot on RB and at this point, we don't know which maps were and weren't actually found. We need to check on the pre-historic asset tracker

About RB on 2023

Tommy_LedZep · 2022-08-09

Hi,

I think your issue is the normal behavior of RB, but I'm not 100% sure though, so worth checking the answer from the developer.

But I can confirm: I use RB on 3ds Max 2022, and bitmaps appearing as "Found" in the Asset Tracker appear as "Missing" in RB.

Slow

After version 2.11 it is crashing to find the maps. I'm using 3dsmax2021

Thank you for this excellent tool

ratatouille · 2017-09-26

Hi,
great script without doubt. also so organise.
i have one issue, when i select missing maps it doesn't select object as you shows in the video.
Is there anything im missing?

ratatouille · 2017-09-26

Im really stupid. you need to double click to select models related to that texture.

colinsenner · 2017-09-27

Not stupid at all. I think I changed it after release because it was too annoying. :) Glad you enjoy it.

Relink create "empth paths" which can't be removed

Please tell me how can I remove this empthy bitmap paths? It was created after using Relink to DELETE maps. I'd love to get your help Colin, Thanks.

any chance to make it work in batch mode ?

NicolasC · 2015-10-06

oh, yes, please :)

colinsenner · 2015-10-15

It's already completely batchable :) You can use it with BatchItMax or similar scripts:

The documentation for how to use it from another script is under "Documentation" on my site: http://www.colinsenner.com/scripts/relink-bitmaps

Hope this helps :)

What about duplicate filenames ?

Tommy_LedZep · 2016-03-25

Hi Colin,

Thank you for this great and useful script !
I noticed that when I relink missing bitmaps to a given folder, no matter if duplicate bitmaps filenames exist inside of it or not, your script will relink missing bitmaps with the first occurrence founded in the given folder.
Well, an organized artist doesn't let duplicate filename appear but nothing is perfect in this world and when working on scenes made by other artists this kind of thing can happen.
So I thought it would be nice if your script could handle such situation and tell the user something like "hey, the missing map you're trying to relink has several occurrences in the folder where you're telling me to search: tell me what occurrence you want to use".

Thank you again Colin :)

Vipera · 2015-09-30

This script is useless to me with the fixed windows. I have very long paths to bitmaps. Since I cannot see them all the time in your script window I cannot point a right path for each bitmap. Please make your script windows re-sizable. Thanks!

colinsenner · 2015-09-30

You can relink to a directory without seeing where every path points to. Since directories are searched recursively, just point it to a lower subdirectory and it'll find all the maps.

You can also "Strip Missing Paths", if you don't want to see them at all and then it's easy to tell which map you're missing.

I mean there's lots of alternatives to just having resizeable windows...You sort of need to take a sec and learn any new tool before you declare it useless.

Good luck at any rate, I hope you get your maps relinked quickly.

Donate window

obaida · 2015-08-22

Thank you Colin very important script
i want to ask if you can remove the donate window and put it inside the main window , its better than closing it each time.

Vipera · 2015-06-30

Please make 'Missing Bitmaps' window re-sizable.

locb · 2015-06-24

It would be good if "Search directory of the script" matched "Project folder of my sceen", by default.

k2000 · 2015-02-22

Hi
is it possible to fix an issue?
sometimes path is stripped - it shows only name for a bitmap (like 'name.jpg' but no path)
and I found the script cannot fix such maps (only standard asset tracking tool helps)

But few days back everything was fine.

I am looking forward to hear from you as I have been stucked in between

Please help!!!!

colinsenner · 2014-09-29

I've sent you an email regarding this problem.

colinsenner · 2014-10-02

This problem was solved by deleting the "Relink Bitmaps.ini" file.

How to uninstall?

the-trooper · 2014-09-20

How do i uninstall this script? Thanks in advance!

locb · 2014-03-29

How can i delet not "all missing bitmats" but only selected?

colinsenner · 2014-08-06

You can double-click the missing bitmap, press "Find" and remove the path manually from the material directly.

"Ignore Extensions" not working

weisk · 2013-10-24

I am trying to relink all the bitmaps in a scene, replacing jpgs with png. I see you have said that this is what "ignore extensions" is for, but it does not appear to be working for me. I can relink jpg back to jpg, but not to png (of the same name).

I am using 3ds Max 2014 x64.

is it possible to make the search field writable directly?
if so you could copy paste paths directly into it.

don't forget my post before this. :)

thanks
themaxxer

is this possible to implement?

themaxxer · 2013-08-13

hi colin

I use your script every day and I have a question for more features.
is it possible to implement the option for gamma? because the script have to relink the maps I thought it could be possible to change also the gamma on the fly.

here is the option of max...
http://clip2net.com/clip/m236524/1376400040-clip-2kb.png

because some evermotion maps are set to "use image's own gamma" and that's not good!!!!

thanks
themaxxer

colinsenner · 2013-08-21

Yeah Maxxer. I've looked for this ability in 3dsmax available through maxscript, but it's not exposed to scripting. BUT! There is good news. Max2014 automatically handles this completely, so when you switch, it'll already be taken care of.

themaxxer · 2013-09-27

hello colin

would it be possible to include a "search and rename with wildcard prefix"
I reorganize my models and sometimes a have to rename the textures, then no script is helping to remapping the maps, because the map name doesn't match anymore.

usually I rename the maps with some prefix like the model name e.g. model_01_map_jpg
is it possible to implement a search string as wildcard for remapping such files?

thanks for your effort.

best regards
themaxxer

Good idea

colinsenner · 2013-09-30

I'm pretty sure this is possible. But how would it distinguish between texture-brick-diffuse.jpg and the bump version? As for the editable path there is an easy way. Press ... And paste any path in the bottom edit text field.

themaxxer · 2013-10-02

hm... that's a problem.
but the models has the "old" paths to the texture, e.g "map1_DIF.jpg". if the map is renamed to "model_map1_DIF.jpg" we need a input field for the wildcard in this example "#model_" as prefix. so relink script has to relink all maps with this prefix, if there is another model with maps without this prefix it's ignored. doesn't that work? you can then restart the script for all other maps...

would be great to have something like that.

best regards
themaxxer

Max 2014 vray proxies

Hi Colin,
I love your script and use it for years. Thank you! Since I've jumped to Max 2014 the script can't find missing vrmeshes. I use 2.05 of course. Do you plan any update? That would be extremely necessary. Cheers!

I recognize those bitmaps as the default Mental ray materials that are loaded in the material editor. If you switch your UI to a standard/vray ui setup via

Customize->Custom UI and Defaults Switcher

You can get rid of those pesky maps.

Cheers.

Edit Saved Path List

grasshopper · 2013-06-25

Hi Colin, Fantastic script. Saves so much time.

Is it possible to edit the saved path list with a text editor? I have over 50 paths and every time I update max I need to input them on a number of PC's. It would also be handy to be able to reorder them so I can move the most commonly used ones to the top. Thanks again! :)

colinsenner · 2013-06-26

Yeah it is. It's saved in an .ini file (which I believe is called "Relink Bitmaps.ini". It's in your user folder, open max, goto "MaxScript->Listener", and type "getdir #userscripts", and hit Shift+Enter, paste the path it gives you into explorer and it's in a directory called Relink Bitmaps. Cheers.

Batch process tons of files

cmuscata · 2015-01-09

Hi I have a problem in that some files have a similar name (in different directories) and i need to process thousands of files. Is there a way to create a list of the "new paths" relative to the old paths? For example: "c:/sand.jpg" is now located in "C:/TEXTURES/sand.jpg" and replace it in EVERY file?

Thanks,
Chris

colinsenner · 2015-01-29

Yes, entirely possible and straightforward, please watch the youtube video on the page to explain the functionality.

Relink Bitmaps

Sandeep Singh · 2013-06-08

hi Colin,
your script is really great.
but i was finding something can help me to re-link all map files for my material library ,i tried 'Bitmap/photomertic path'from Utilities ,it shows two options
(1)include material editor
(2)include material library
it works fine for materials applied on objects in scene and for materials in material editor .
BUT not for any library materials even if you check option "include Material library" :(
i did't find anything to solve this problem .

colinsenner · 2013-06-10

Great find. I didn't even know those existed. For the moment Relink Bitmaps will consider maps if they're in the material editor, so that doesn't need to be changed. I have not currently added support for material libraries and I'll look into the best way to go about this. Thank you.

-Colin

deohboeh · 2013-04-26

Hey! Amazing script! Is it possible to rename the file extension of all the scene files... I need to convert all my material files to tga before export to udk... so I needed to rename the file referenced in the scene.. It would have been a great help! :)

Relative path

Univerpix Studio · 2013-03-30

I use relative path for my projects. Your script display all of my bitmaps as missing files. But they are not missing, they just use relative path. So it should be a good feature if the script search for files relative to project folder.

Idea

colinsenner · 2013-04-01

Fantastic Idea. I'll include this in a future version. On the up side, it shouldn't hurt anything if you use it to find maps :).

relink script beingused in the batch library helper script

cgtiger · 2013-01-22

Hello Colin, may i just say I love your scripts, they are awesome...

I am not sure if you are aware one of our friends on here who is new to scripting and i know nothing of scripting to point out, has been developing a new script which uses your relink bitmaps script, as an automatic feature.
basically it its an automated opening and saving script that along the way uses your relink to fix the texture paths, and does it on a whole folder at a time....GREAT.

However i cannot get the damm thing working, crashes out when it hits your script each time...now I know its not your script thats not working, i think its little bugs in his script...
I am wanting to ask you, could you possibly please install his script and read about it etc, and see if you can actually get it to work, he might just need a little help refining it slightly....its the Batch Library Helper
please see his page on here at
http://www.scriptspot.com/3ds-max/scripts/batch-library-helper-v1-0-1

I'm just thinking this would be such a great script via your script to help the world organize their library assets..if only it worked.
i think its got to be something really simple to fix, it just needs fresh eyes on it, I hope he doesn't mind me asking you either, he does ask for extra help from anyone on his page.
I am just so excited about getting this working.
many thanks in aadvance if you get to do this

asymptote · 2012-05-08

Firstly thanks for a great tool for max :)
I'm having a few problems with this script, does this find/load duplicate textures ?
I'm importing a track from Geoff Crammonds GP4, I import 3769 3ds objects each with an assigned texture.
RB is finding 300 instances of the same texture (there are lots of little separate objects each with the same texture)
When I relink I run out of memory very quickly and Max crashes. (I have 4gb)
The same thing happens If I add the texture folder to the user paths and render the scene before relinking, I think max tries to load the same texture 300 times ?
I may be doing something wrong but I'm not sure.
I'd appreciate any suggestions you might have. I can provide files for testing if you have time.
Thanks in advance.

BTW I tried contacting you via email but kept getting Return to Sender.

danb4026 · 2011-11-10

Hey Colin,

I am having an issue with Relink Bitmaps not seaching subfolders even though it is setup to search sub folders. I always have to
enter the exact subfolder that an map is located in for relink to find the map. This really defeats the purpose of having Relink Bitmaps.

I also made a donation a very long time ago to get rid of the "Donate" message when starting RB. You sent me a license way back, but it did not
resolve the issue. I just chose to put up with it.

Thanks for any assistance you might provide,

Dan Black

colinsenner · 2011-11-10

Dan,
Is there any way you can get my a file that exhibits this behavior so I can fix it. I'll contact you via email now regarding this post.

Thanks,
Colin

pekili · 2011-11-09

I just wanna drop line here,colin my brother your script is the the most used script on my max scenes.Peace bro and thanx for your share with comunity :)

cecofuli · 2011-11-09

Ok, I will send you an en email :)
But I've this error also for an empty scene.

Error...

cecofuli · 2011-11-04

Hi Colin
first, thank for the script. But, I don't know why, now I've this error:

-- Incompatible types: 734380, and undefined

I reinstalled the, delete my maxstart, but I've the same problem :/

colinsenner · 2011-11-04

Is there any way you can get me a sample file that crashes (something relatively small)? If it does indeed crash it, I'll give you a free license of the script for your help. I'll send you an email regarding this now.

-Colin

colinsenner · 2011-11-04

Actually, you don't list your email address on your profile or a website I can find that information out. Please email me at colin[dot]senner[at]gmail[dot]com and I'll get this taken care of.

Cheers,
Colin

danielmn · 2011-09-26

is this compatible with max 2012

i keep relink and it, just strip all paths

colinsenner · 2011-11-04

Yep, fully compatible with Max 2012.

Vipera · 2011-09-19

How can I select what I need if I cannot see the file name in a list?

Window "Missing Bitmaps" should be able to change size

Vipera · 2011-09-16

I cannot use this script because I have long bitmap paths and window "Missing Bitmaps" is modal. So, I cannot see the full path.

colinsenner · 2011-09-16

I agree with the suggestion, however it's quite easy to see the full path if you click on the missing map (or double-click), the script will paste the full path above the missing maps, allowing you to copy the full path.

-Colin

thanks

babo · 2011-08-15

thank you very much einstein for this free useful script. . .

colinsenner · 2011-08-15

Haha, I'm no Einstein, but the compliment is a good sentiment. Enjoy!

-Colin

the internal update feature caused a bug here..

crystal3d · 2011-07-11

hello , this great script is giving problems after:

it asked me if i wanted to update to new version and i chose "later"
now it gives me this error when i run it

--Unable to convert: undefined to type : Integer.

now i will try a fresh install

View map in viewport

Oldskoolflash · 2011-06-28

Hi Colin, this script is great but I have found it disables the view map in viewport function. I have to copy a blank slot into the diffuse slot, and then add the bitmap again. It then views as normal in the viewport. Clicking reload has no effect. Have you run in to this problem before?

I am using Max 2010 Design with a Quadro FX 1700.

Thanks for the video "Missing External Files"

haadolfo · 2011-02-07

One would think 3ds Max would do a better job for Missing External Files.

thank you for the

jinj · 2011-01-26

Edited:
thank you for the explanation... but I know about and I find it good for the job.

but for example if you work with a indigo scene or maxwell render one... you also need some special text files, like *.nk that contains all ior data to build directly a real material like platin without to edit it in a way.

I tried with an imported max setted scene for maxwell from another machine... and it obviously replace all maps.... but it don't look for such files that are to be loaded from a slot in the material editor. like for example a *.mxm file that is a maxwell material file.

it would be cool if your good tool could recognize all kind of files in the material editor or in the scene.... and relink them.
for example if the ior/r2/mxm file is missing.... maxwell after parsing the scene stop.... without to start rendering

thank you any way

jinj · 2011-01-24

Hi,

cool script... one question... is it compatible with other renderers like maxwell or indigo?
or materials classes are needed to be work?

thanks

Yes

colinsenner · 2011-01-24

It's compatible with any renderer. It just relinks your bitmap files to the correct path. It doesn't care what materials they're assigned to.

Enjoy,
Colin

can it also look for *.nk,

jinj · 2011-01-24

EDITED:

thank you for fast feedback ;)

well I've installed and checked ;) *.nk, *.ior, *.r2, etc. all special files they are not recognized by the tool.

is there a way to add them?
If this could be possible that would be awesome.. cause it's very annoing to look for them each time. the files are primarely text file with a custum extension.

thanks

The tool

colinsenner · 2011-01-24

It just finds maps that are currently missing in the scene regardless of the extension.

For instance: if you are working on a portable harddrive and your maps are on "K:\Textures\Maps\" and then you switch to a computer without a K: drive, your maps will be missing and 3dsmax will prompt you to find them. If you just point Relink Bitmaps at the new directory they're all in, it'll fix them all for you.

Gaffer61,
Recently old email was deleted without my knowing it so I put big text on my site letting users know the new email I'll be using. This has affected some users, and I apologize for the inconvenience. Please send license request emails to colin.senner@gmail.com instead of the listed email. I'll be updating Relink Bitmaps in a week or so to fix the email problem and implement some users wishlists. Be on the lookout!

Thank you and sorry about that,
Colin

A few suggestions:

crystal3d · 2011-01-15

hello and good day,
I got some sggestions for your already awesome script.

#1:
"Check Local paths"

it will display locally pathed files and display them as greyed out and another button to repath them.

#2:
A check for relative and non-UNC paths and correct them to UNC paths..

that would complete this nice package.

good day.

Thanks!

colinsenner · 2011-01-24

Great wishlist additions. I'll see what I have time for with this next update!

Thanks Crystal3d,
Colin

Donation!

gaffer61 · 2011-01-11

Hello Colin

I recently sent you a donation for your fab script but I haven't heard back. I have sent you a couple of emails but no response. I would appreciate a response, you can have to much of a good thing looking at your lovely face :)

colinsenner · 2010-07-25

Thanks a ton Kartoffel. Any help is appreciated. I'm just glad I was able to save your butt ;). Tell your friends and co-workers about it as well. Also, I just released a video and a new script called "Tweaker", just search for it on Scriptspot and check it out, maybe you could use it as well :). It's my new favorite script.

Tweaker video:   http://www.scriptspot.com/3ds-max/scripts/tweaker

The script is on my site: www.colinsenner.com.

As always, I'm still looking for my dream career in game-development.

New version coming very soon (This week), new features:

Max 2011 Support: Full support for max 2011 and minor bug fixes (thanks Ruud3DV!)
Support for finding renamed maps: Relink Bitmaps will now have the option to find completely renamed maps
Ignore File extensions: For if a bitmap changes file extensions will link it to the new extension
Speedup of selecting missing bitmaps in the scene
Batching:
Run relink bitmaps over a series of max files to relink them all

ANDDNA · 2010-07-15

Nice. Love this script - has saved my a$$ several times in VERY short order. I'll be donating. You deserve it.

No problem mate.
I checked out your website/portfolio.
If you can't get a job in the field.. I don't know who can.

Keep sending out your demo reel and resume to companies, I am sure someone will see the potential in your work.

I also searched you on linkedin.com and couldn't find you there, you should definitely sign up, i think its a great resource and might come in handy.

Happy Holidays

designbyag · 2009-12-23

Colin, this is an awesome script.
I had a 3d apartment designed a few months back, and now that i need it rendered out as a video again for a demo reel.. to my disapointment more then half the bitmaps were missing in action.

Found your script, WORKED like a charm! only 2 bitmaps still missing, but thats no problem, definite time saver!

I am in between jobs now, but I donated to your cause anyway.
Will donate again once I land on my feet.

Thanks a ton.

colinsenner · 2009-12-23

Hey, thanks for the kind words and donation. I'm still looking for work in archvis or game dev. I always love hearing stories about how people use the script and how much time they've saved. It makes me feel good about all the time and effort I put into it. Hope you're well and your holidays are great. If you know of a job, ill basically work for free nowdays :)

Holy crap, That's crazy...Another spot I didn't think to detect....Max is so strange sometimes.

brittnell · 2009-12-02

Chris, I owe you a beer.

I inherited this scene from someone else, and would NEVER have thought to look there (I rarely use scene states).

Excellent hunting!

brittnell · 2009-12-02

Anyone up to the challenge of finding the hiding spot of this sneaky #@^&# file ("map.jpg") in an otherwise EMPTY scene?

I've tried all I can, and can't figure it out... RB doesn't notice it as missing.

Best of luck!

@ kutsanan : maybe you suppose to be use windows 7 RTM (16385....)

colinsenner · 2009-10-09

Good idea, please make sure you're using the latest RTM. I will be checking the release version as soon as it's available.

colinsenner · 2009-10-09

I will check on this in 2 weeks when Windows 7 is released, I'll pick it up immediately and check into it. Sorry for the long wait. If you could send me the file via email (in my contact information) I'll look right into it as soon as I can Kutsanan.

-Colin

colinsenner · 2009-10-08

I don't have Windows 7, so until it's released (Oct 22nd) here's what you can do. Download the newest version 2.01, "Relink Bitmaps v2.01.mzp" and rename it to "Relink Bitmaps v2.01.zip". Open the zip file and manually copy these files to the following locations:

Copy these files to "maxroot\scripts\Relink Bitmaps" (usually "C:\Program Files\Autodesk\3ds Max 2009\scripts\Relink Bitmaps"):

C_Lib.mse
Relink_Lib.mse
Relink Bitmaps.mse
Relink Bitmaps_macro.mcr
InstalledMessage.ms
header.png
Relink Bitmaps_macro.mcr

Copy these files to maxroot\ui\icons:

RelinkBitmaps_16i.bmp
RelinkBitmaps_24i.bmp

Then just goto maxscript->Run Script and run "Relink Bitmaps_macro.mcr", which will install it manually.

sorry for this problem, once I get win7 I'll take a look at it!

hehehe.....are you OK with it!?

Thank!

Christopher Grant · 2009-07-24

I should have mentioned that since I ran into it too. Relink Bitmaps needs to be run once before it's available via commandline. You don't need to do anything in the UI - just run it, then close it and it'll work in the listener...

Chris

rempage · 2009-07-23

Hmm.. I was trying to use max listener as you suggested but it doesn't work for me. When I type say:"sceneRelinkBitmaps"- nothing happens. Am I missing something ? Thanks and sorry for dumb questions:_

Christopher Grant · 2009-07-21

Just wanted to point out the command line mode in Relink Bitmaps
works great to batch fix textures over many Max files. I used it this
morning to quickly repath a couple hundred AXYZ assets to a new texture
path. In my case I used Relink Bitmaps in conjunction with another
great script - "Batch It Max" by Paul Neale.

colinsenner · 2009-07-22

Thanks for the comment Chris! Paul is infinitely talented :)

-Colin

rempage · 2009-07-08

It may be problem with my windows settings... but I don't know where. Anyway I can wait for an update. Thanks for your help.

rempage · 2009-07-25

Yeah! I found the problem with window size!:) My font size (DPI) was 120- not default 96. Thanks again for a great script. Works like a charm.

colinsenner · 2009-07-07

I'm on vista as well using the default appearance theme, with no viewing problems. Perhaps you could try lowering the font size or title bar size as a temporary fix, till I can release an update later this week?

rempage · 2009-07-07

Didn't help unfortunately. Still same problem. I could change Title Bar's font but lower border of your script is still cut-like. I'm running vista ultimate x64 with 3ds max 2009 x64.

colinsenner · 2009-07-07

If you needed to relink immediately or are unable to resize the "Active Title Bar", you can easily use the Command Line mode to do this, check to documentation on my website at
www.colinsenner.com/scripts/relink-bitmaps, and can relink just by using the listener window.

colinsenner · 2009-07-07

Ah, I see your problem. Your problem appears to be your Windows Appearance Settings have the Title Bar bigger than the script was anticipating.

To fix right-click on your desktop, goto "Properties", click the "Appearance Tab" at the top, click "Advanced...." on the lower right. Change the item to "Active Title Bar" and reduce its size. Let me know if this doesn't work.

colinsenner · 2009-07-06

No problem Hongxu, let me know if you have any more suggestions for improvement!

trick · 2009-06-29

Kutsanan,

If you are really nagged by this dialog, you are probably using this script a lot. So you should simply make a donation, after which you will get a keyfile that removes the nag-screen ;)

trick · 2009-06-29

Collin,

Yes I have tried all kinds of utilities for this. But they either crash, are not compatible with some plugins I use, have strange licensing systems, are not updated regularly or do not support ALL assets visible in Max's asset tracker. I just keep hoping for one script/plugin that takes care of ALL my asset handling ;)

trick · 2009-06-28

Collin,

Almost right ;)
Just a button with option to copy all assets to a directory and an "optional" option to relink these assets internally to this new location. Automatic relinking to the new location is not always required.

colinsenner · 2009-06-28

I'll look into it, though there are some utilities that already do this on this site, I'll check into it asap.

colinsenner · 2009-06-28

All the more reason to get it done :). What is your ideal? A "Resource Collect" button, where you click it and then pick a directory to save everything to? Or am I missing something?

trick · 2009-06-28

Colin,

Once I can use your script to collect/relink everything that is reported by the Max Tracking utility, I will gladly diminish your student loan ;)

colinsenner · 2009-06-28

thanks Trick, I just finished a complete rewrite of Relink Bitmaps, now version 2.0 (posted above). I'll update version 2.0 with support for that. 2.0 will automatically notify you if there is a newer version available!

Best wishes and thank you for your kind words,
Colin

trick · 2009-06-28

Nice utility !

However I really miss the possibility to use it as a resource collector as you can do with the Max utility. I mostly want ALL my assets collected in one location so I can easily back things up or send it to an external renderfarm. The Max tool still does not support VRMesh (also those linked in VRayScatter and Groundwiz), VRayHDRI's, etc.

colinsenner · 2009-06-27

You can run the 2010 version of the script in 2009 with no problems at all! I'm posting version 2.0 here and on my website later today (at the latest early tomorrow), I'll update the links for "Download Relink Bitmaps" when it's posted, the page exists though, I'm currently finalizing it, we'll get this sorted out.

Max 2010 Version uploaded, please report found bugs to me via email, have a great day!

ztravnicky · 2009-01-21

The beta version works very well and relinking (dumping) is nice and smooth, now. You ROCKS! ;)
Yet, two small notes about dumping. I noticed that the list of missing maps (or some DATA) stays in memory also, which cause increment at the end of relinking process when the scene is checked again. At the end, when the script is closed (dialog), data stays in memory as well. Some "manual button" for flushing out data could help.
Anyway, thanks for your efforts... looking forward to release 2.0 ! ;o)

Zbynek

colinsenner · 2009-01-21

Unfortunately Maxscript doesn't provide much access to memory routines etc. I'm not exactly sure what is staying in memory as the list of missing map files uses very very small memory.

What you're probably seeing is max's loading of bitmaps in the viewport (which is usually very sizable) and while the script is running, it is continually clearing out those maps of memory which is appearing as a drop in your memory usage, and then when it finishes it goes back up because max has to reload the maps for the viewport again. For next release it will be smoother and should use less memory, but we'll see.

To improve the script execution speed find this line in the test 1.15b

local increment = 150 -- every n maps GC()

and change the increment to be higher, forcing a GC() and a FreeSceneBitmaps() less often. I set it very low to make sure it worked, but you can tweak this to make the script run faster by not forcing a garbage collect quite as often.

Good luck,
Colin

colinsenner · 2009-01-20

Ok, got it, seems to work just fine. Use this version until I rewrite the entire script for 2.0 (coming soon)! Check back soon, let me know how it works.

-Colin

Attachments

colinsenner · 2009-01-20

I have never heard of any users having this problem, perhaps there are some. I can make a quick work around and upload it today forcing a Garbage collection to take place every 500 maps or so, which should relieve you of your RAM. However, I really don't know how it might adversely affect anything clearing the ram, it might even make the script inoperable or it might really do nothing at all. Either way we'll try. I'll upload a "TEST" version with your name to the site in 5 minutes to see if we can remedy the problem.

Please note: please save before using the test version as it might not work as expected, but it really should work just fine (just slowly). We'll see, download it and let me know how it goes. And as always please give me a vote if it works :)

-Colin

ztravnicky · 2009-01-20

Hi Colin,
I have tested your script for my issue and I would like to give you some idea for "big" improvement.
I'm facing scene with cca.1700 maps and because of the situation I have to re-link all bitmaps.
The problem is memory allocation (RAM). With such huge amount of maps, 3dsmax is reaching maximum usage of RAM. When I hit re-link button, at the end when the progress status says it is relinking, the memory starts going up until 3dsmax crashes. The default bitmap collector does the same, except it doesn't crash. Unfortunately the scene is not possible to save, because of the usage of RAM again.. 3dsmax crashes.
Do I have any chance, that you "upgrade" your script? The case is increasing memory usage when proceeding. I think, some dumping after each or some amount operations would be great not just for me ;o)

In other ways the script looks GREAT!

Zbynek

colinsenner · 2009-01-06

Excellent. Your script looks great.

-Colin

relief7 · 2008-12-28

Hi Colin ! hi everybody !

I do not mean to steal the show but I just uploaded my version of a relinking tool. It supports basically any file or asset that can be tracked via MAX's asset browser (IES, HDRIs, most of the maps etc.). If anybody needs it, get it here http://scriptspot.com/3ds-max/relink-assets

Sorry once again, I just want to help out because I read that some people still have problems with proprietary files. Maybe my script can be used in addition to yours so everybody can get the results that they want. One thing is for sure... MAX's asset management needs a big overhaul :-)

Happy new year to all the max scripters out there !

Markus

hongxu · 2009-01-06

the relief script look great but not very useful compare to colin's script . I can use asset tracking to manual reset all the path easily, :and with vray sp1 and up i could even set the path of vrmesh file . Not like colin script, it automaticly seach and replace the path . I still looking for the "relink .vrmesh" scrip as colin once promised :D.

colinsenner · 2009-01-06

You got me! I've put off rewritting relink-bitmaps for some time now clearly. I am planning some new functionality as well as functionalizing the process so you can execute the relink bitmaps from a command line or for use in other scripts! These are planned for next release.

The main problem has been time and the looming of a 2nd rewrite for this beast. I guarantee performance increases in the future version and will get to it, as well as finding all the hiding bitmaps that Brittnell so diligently finds for me.

The rewrite will be much more versatile (although there is no plans for relinking ALL assets) and in adding versatility I can easily add support for vrmesh files and certainly will.

Thank you for your kind words Hongxu,
Colin

colinsenner · 2008-12-18

Haven't forgotten about you Britt, just busy :). The Holidays are coming up, hope everyone here has a great time for them. If anyone is near Kansas City I'll take you out for a holiday beer.

colinsenner · 2008-12-05

I'll take a look at that soon Britt, thanks.

-Colin

brittnell · 2008-12-06

It's all good Colin.

Thank you!

colinsenner · 2008-12-05

No problem, thank you for your comment.

haldus · 2008-12-05

great script! it's simply fantastic! thanks for sharing
best regards

brittnell · 2008-11-07

Hey Colin,

Yeah, it doesn't catch bitmaps missing from "reflect/refract".

See the attached .max file, which has the "missing map" ("HP033.jpg" renamed to "HP033.xxx").

I'll try and look into the .ifl issue a bit further in a few.

Thanks again,

Britt

Thanks Defex. There will be an update sometime soon, it will in part be a re-write, but will have some new great functionality to save you time. Please watch for the update soon. -Colin

defex · 2008-11-06

one of the biggest life savers of all!

colinsenner · 2008-11-05

Yes please let me know Brittnell. They shouldn't be able to hide in either of those cases but I don't know about the image sequence .ifl file, maybe the ifl file exists but the others don't that is a possibility. Please let me know and thank you for everything once again.

brittnell · 2008-11-05

Hey Colin,

I think I may have a couple other places where bitmaps can hide:

In a reflect/refract map that loads (top/front/etc.) from image files.

Map channels that call a .ifl (may need to double-check).

Thanks again!

jsrocha · 2008-10-17

very , very useful script this one. I just have one suggestion: make an option to the output list with just the bitmap name on it. I mean, withou all the path of the file. This, to me, would be a great improvment......
anyway, this script is a master piece ;)
best regards...

JSR

colinsenner · 2008-10-18

I'll add the bitmap name to the output list at the beginning if you like. I'll update it in the next week or so. Thank you for your kind words. Hope it saves you time and energy.

fajar · 2008-09-20

cheer 4 you !! very fast,like I hope from you!!!
very fast respond!!!

colinsenner · 2008-09-17

Hey Hongxu,
I am writing a separate script quickly for vrmesh relinking and will have it out soon!

-Colin

hongxu · 2008-09-17

hi Colin!
You did a great works, this script helps me very much.
But can this script be edited to find and relink missing .vrmesh file ???? If that is posible, this script is perfect :D
BR.

brittnell · 2008-09-16

Works fine in 2009.  (heh heh, that rhymes)

colinsenner · 2008-09-16

Feel free to run this script in Max 2009 and let me know how it works!

Follow the install instructions up top ^. Thank you.

-Colin

fajar · 2008-09-16

if your not tested in max 2009 i`ll help U to test it!! and any error will send to you!!

I just wanna help!!

thx!

fajar · 2008-09-16

It's actually not a compiled plugin, it's a script. And it works with Max 7 and up (Untested on 3dsmax 2009) but it works on my version of 2008 perfectly! Hope this helps.

```````````````````````````````````````````````````````````
hey colin's where is your new scripted plugin link ?
colinsenner · 2008-09-02
It's actually not a compiled plugin, it's a script. And it works with Max 7 and up (Untested on 3dsmax 2009) but it works on my version of 2008 perfectly! Hope this helps.
-Colin
fajar · 2008-09-02
Good think .but still little question "is it
(the plugin) still free?"
but the plugin only support 2 version of 3ds max (ex : for 3ds max 9 plugin only supported in 3ds max 2008, but in 3ds max 2009 is no longer support! you must compile it twice too!!)
thx!
colinsenner · 2008-09-01
I've thought about adding vrmesh relinking to it etc, I think I'll release them as separate plugins though to do that instead of making this script incredibly bloated.
fajar · 2008-09-01
is it possible for you ?? is it so that hard to make !!!
but i'll say thank again!!
fajar · 2008-09-01
~This script is nice , efficient , good and fast too! I would say this script is A rank level and thank`s alot, very helpfull!
~Hey ,Colin can you add some feature like...ehhmmm...relink vrmesh file ,relink ies file ,or mentalray proxy file .it would be more nice.
~far more future feature is may be you can add feature relink and collect to specifik folder so just like bitmap collector in soulburn script.Though it was just my dream couse I can`t write script!
colinsenner · 2008-08-19
oh yuck that would be painful, I'll definitely add a command line option, besides the current variables do you need any more functionality?
vsai · 2008-08-19
Colin, If you do go the way of  a struct, could it be possible to add a way to use the script without the UI.. for example.
relink_bitmaps=relink_bitmaps()
relink_bitmaps.replace_maps dir:"\\path\" recursive:true
That would allow using it in a semi 'automatic' fashion. I've sort of rigged this up in an older version you had posted that i'm using here as a 'post-open' script for catalogging a bunch of maxfiles.(But in the process pretty much destroyed the ui hehe)
I know thats a bit of a pain though, requiring changing all of the rlt_Search.Chk's and whatnot into variables that are passed into the function instead of how they are now
On the plus side! I'm Learning a fair amount from taking apart your code bits, thanks for sharing :D
brittnell · 2008-08-19
Hey Colin,
I've got another "weird" place for you to look for those sneaky bitmaps...
Today we encountered a scene where local (c:) bitmaps were used by an artist in a PFlow Particle Age shader.  Had to open up Particle View in order to find them.
Just like the Unwrap UVW issue, they post a "missing" notificacation on scene-open, but are not visble to Relink Bitmaps.
How come I always get the "fun" ones?  ;)
Cheers,
Britt
colinsenner · 2008-08-19
I haven't used pflow much, I'll investigate. Thanks Britt!
dandg · 2008-08-07
Hi Colin,
First off thanks for giving the script away it solves a problem that allot of studios have. One thing that could be quite good would be to unify all those functions that are currently in global space into a single struct so that only it was in global space. Just my two cents..
Cheers
Dave
colinsenner · 2008-08-08
Good idea and certainly better form! Many thanks.
brittnell · 2008-07-30
AWESOME!
😆
Thanks again Colin.
colinsenner · 2008-07-31
Always Britt, let me know if you run into anything problematic, or have any ideas for enhancing your workflow.
-Colin
colinsenner · 2008-07-30
Updated with your suggestion Britt and hopefully the new find tool will help you as well S-ed!
-Colin
colinsenner · 2008-07-28
Upon next update S-ed you will be able to find the bitmaps very easily by using the functionality I'll be adding that lets you type in a map name "bla-bla_x.jpg" or type in a path name "C:\" and it will populate your material editor with the materials the map is assigned to or dependent on!
I've been using it in production for a few days now and its really helped me fix map issues quickly and efficiently.
Hopefully this will solve your woes, also I'll check on Britt's hidden map stealth "feature" and do my best to address that.
Best,
-Colin
S-ed · 2008-07-28
Yep, that's it, thanks Britt. =P
Maybe add, show "dependend objects" function. Its useful when open someones scene, and there is no one(or some) bitmap.
Like:
Missing: C:\Textures\proj001\test_a.jpg
Object: Tree_01_trunk
Missing: C:\Textures\proj001\bla-bla_x.jpg
Object: Tree_01_leaf_045
It's hard to find it though mat browser, sometimes scene consist of hundred mats.
colinsenner · 2008-07-25
Yuck, I'll look into that and look forward to the update sometime next week. Always looking for great new ideas!
brittnell · 2008-07-25
Sorry to butt-in, but maybe it's about files that are mapped to a local drive and thus "found" when opened on the same machine where they reside (and consequently not displayed as "missing" by Relink Bitmaps), however, when the scene is sent to network render, Max fails to find the file(s) (since it is still expecting them to be local, and not on the network drive)... ?
If that is the issue, then it should just be a matter of deleting all local directories listed under Max's "Customize/Configure User Paths/External Files" prior to opening the scene and running the Relink Bitmap script.
Dunno... Seems a bit unrelated to the script itself, but I figure it's worth a shot.
Good luck!
colinsenner · 2008-07-25
Good call Britt! Following Britt's instructions (of removing User Paths/External Files) before you open the scene should make them missing. Of course renaming the root folder of the maps to something from like
"C:\Maps\" to "C:\MapsZ" should also break the connection and make them go missing, in which case you could copy the maps to the network directory and relink them there.
Hopefully you are right Britt.
Also: I'm planning on updating this script providing a bit more functionality (I've written a separate script that will plugin to this one which when given a bitmap name will populate the material editor with all materials it is assigned to and help you track down missing maps which I'm thinking of incorporating, what do you think britt?)
-Colin
brittnell · 2008-07-25
That new functionality sounds great.  A really good idea.
You know, that reminds me of something (slightly related)... I've found one "sneaky" spot where bitmaps can "hide", and not be found using any means other than manual hunting (even Relink Bitmaps doesn't catch them)... If a bitmap is loaded into an "Unwrap UVW" modifier, it effectively runs in "stealth mode", and doesn't show up in any of the regular spots.  If missing/moved/etc, it can still cause network rendering issues.
Collapsing modifier stacks seems to be the easiest way to remedy the situation.
...
Took about a day of hair pulling to corner that one. 😠
colinsenner · 2008-07-24
I still don't understand, relink-bitmaps script if it finds a missing bitmap and you tell it where to look it will search for the missing bitmap and when it finds it, it will re-assign it.
-Colin
Hope this helps, I'll need more information if you are having a problem. Maybe you could step-by-step me through your problem?
S-ed · 2008-07-21
It's not see path marked as "found"? I can't send to network render with such maps.
I have 2 maps with same bitmap, but one - "ok", other - "found". Script can't see it. =(
colinsenner · 2008-07-22
Are you saying that relink-bitmaps can't find a bitmap in your scene but you know it's missing? Please let me know.
-Colin
S-ed · 2008-07-23
I't not missing, it's "found" (when it cant be found by it's primary path, but found in one of project's paths). Network render cant assign render to server when one of those maps in scene.
p.s.: Sorry 4 my eng.
colinsenner · 2008-01-31
Brittnell,
For now to keep compatibility with users that haven't switched over yet it will work with max versions 7+. Thanks for the point! Tell your co-workers. Please revisit the installation instructions for any install confusion as it's changed in the past 2 versions.
Best,
Colin
AWESOME... Thanks! Now I
brittnell · 2008-01-31
AWESOME... Thanks!
Now I just wish I could add more points for this script.
😎
Ps. We are using Max2008 if that makes any difference.
colinsenner · 2008-01-31
Brittnell,
Added support for ignoring case in the script, please note due to max not including a native toUppercase function until Max2008 enabling it will result in a bit slower execution, however other enhancements were done with regards to speed.
Note: I've also added USER EDITABLE VARIABLES for users like you and me who use this script alot. It allows you to easily change your default options for script execution
Things like:
Defaulting Recursive Searching off / on
Defaulting Ignore Case off / on
Changing the default Browsing Directory to your main resource of maps etc.
To edit these variables open the script and edit the values under the section entitled "USER EDITABLE VARIABLES".
Enjoy,
Colin
colinsenner · 2008-01-31
Brittnell,
I will update the script with your request sometime this week. Please check back.
-Colin
brittnell · 2008-01-30
Hey there,
Thanks again for this great script, I'm pretty sure I use it every day.
One quick request:  Is it possible to have it ignore letter casing?  For example, I often encounter situations where Max is looking for file "aaaa.jpg", and does not recognize the existing file "AAAA.jpg" (or "aaaa.JPG").
I'm not how so many of our scenes scenes developed this issue, but if there were an easy way to use Relink Bitmaps to correct it, that would be awesome.
Cool cool!
colinsenner · 2008-01-29
Update: Version 1.12,
Added user feedback concerning Interactive Mode
Many many thanks Eric. I hope it saves you time and enriches your life somehow.
colinsenner · 2007-12-13
Updated, there was a small bug in version 1.10, if you downloaded it yesterday, please re-download the newest version 1.11
overseastom · 2007-12-12
Hi Colin - thanks for the reply :) With regards to the window resizing, I think it's a great idea for ease-of-use but it wasn't what I meant. I was talking about the ability to copy and paste the missing maps' path list into an email to let other collaborators know the maps that are missing and their locations. I know I can do it one path at a time, I just had a lot of paths to copy was all...
I did mean the environment slot, because a map was missing from there in the scene I used your script with. It must have been an HDRI map, that explains it's absence from your script's listing. Is it a nightmare to include HDRI relinking in your script too? :)
I want to say thanks again for all your work on this - it's sooooo much better than the Max standard path editor and it's obviously saving a fair few of us Max users quite a bit of time and sanity. Cheers Colin!!
-Tom
colinsenner · 2007-12-12
Tom,
Well implementing something that sounds as simple as window resizing is actually quite complicated. I will update the script today with version 1.10, that has minor cosmetic fixes, is a bit more compact, and has the ability to output all missing maps to a file for easy emailing/checking/cross-referencing, I think it's a great idea.
Cheers,
Colin
colinsenner · 2007-12-12
Updated with output list and cosmetic fixes, more compact.
Tom, what kind of IES files are you using? How are you adding them? Personally I've never used them, but with a decent explanation of where to create them and edit them I will add support for them as well.
-Colin
overseastom · 2007-12-13
Wow man - thanks for the speedy update!! Regarding the IES files, they are specific light "webs" that you can download that cast beautiful (but render-intensive) light patterns onto walls. In Max, you load them by creating a Light>>Photometric. Then under the Intensity/Color/Distribution rollout change the Distribution box from Diffuse to Web. That will open a Web Parameters rollout where there's a web file button that you can load the IES file into. The light in the viewport will now display the shape of the IES light cone.
Writing all that, it sounds like it may be a pain in the arse to update your script. I myself would have no problem using your script for just finding maps and using the Max one for IES files because you never really have many different types of IES in one scene and i understand if you can't be bothered with all the trouble... Anyway Colin, thanks again and good luck if you decide to tackle it :) All the best,
Tom
floetenmaul · 2007-12-11
very handy script. thank you.
one issue though: i have to deal with really long directories/filenames. would it be possible to make the windows resizeable, so i could see the whole pathname? currently it's a kind of guesswork ;)
regards
colinsenner · 2007-12-12
pStar,
Glad to hear my Relink Bitmaps script could help you. I also have to deal with really long directories/filenames so I incorporated the path text field at the bottom of the "Maps" rollout, by double-clicking any missing map, it will paste the file it's looking for in the textbox below.
But thinking about it, it would be nice to see the whole path at once, so in the next version the window will be resizeable. Many thanks for the great suggestion.
-Colin
tripclaw · 2007-12-07
Thanks! I was getting fed up with the shotty version max comes with. With the file I had, that had lots of network paths that were on a slow link in our network, it could take up to 45 mins for the max resource collector to open !! your script took a few seconds to open and only a few minutes to fix all my problems and relink to my side of the network.
You > Discreet.
colinsenner · 2007-12-12
Tripclaw,
Thank you for your kind words. I truly appreciate it.
-Colin
overseastom · 2007-12-05
This script is super-awesome! It just saved me a bunch of time rerouting stuff thru the standard editor so cheers mate!!!! I dunno if you're taking suggestions for the next version (if you make one) but I have two thoughts:
1. Include IES and environment map paths
2. How about being able to print a list of the missing maps or better yet, showing a window to copy the text from?
Thanks again, you rock!
colinsenner · 2008-01-17
overseastom,
I am certainly taking suggestions. As suggested above, the windows will be resizeable for easier reading. I am curious as to what you mean by environment map paths though. Do you mean maps in the 3dsmax environment slot (default hotkey:"8")? Because if a bitmap is in there, then it is already supported. If it's an hdri then it is not.
-Colin
colinsenner · 2007-09-08
themaxxer, please check for version 1.07 :)
brittnell · 2007-07-16
Thanks for this.
It's nice to know I'm not alone in despising the functionality of Max's Bitmap/Photmetric Path tool.  Seems like I need to use it way too often, and when I do, it takes FOR-EVER to open.
I'm anxiously hoping this will be a decent solution.
Cheers!
