batch rename numbered materials

hi all scriptwriters

when you import geometry from sketchup you get the same material but numbered _01, _02, _03 etc. and that's really annoying, because you have a lot of work to clean this up. I would like to have a script to batch delete the last digits of the materials. like remove _01, _02, _03 etc. and then condense the materials.

I have not found a script in database, but maybe there's one already.
