Call for Python tutorials

9
votes

I've been seeing a lot of discussion about using Python with 3ds Max for quite a while now... I'd love to get some resources up describing Python - 3ds Max integration / workflow / processes. If you've got or would write a beginner tutorial or even an advanced tutorial, please share it with the community!

Some questions to get the ball rolling... What is Python? How does it compare to MAXScript? Why should someone use Python? Is Python best for end users or developers? How do you create a simple "hello world" Python script?

Welcome!

Welcome everyone to a modestly upgraded ScriptSpot. While all the same data is exposed and much of UI is similarly structured, it's different (and IMHO better) in several ways that I've wanted for the past couple years. Here are a few of the changes:

SoulburnScripts Updated Sept 18th 2008

votes

NOTICE: I had to make some major changes to sLib to remove several recursion bugs that could cause max to crash. I've successfully removed the bugs, but it's possible I may have introduced new ones, despite a lot of testing to make sure all of the functions still work correctly. If you see any weirdness where scripts you know worked aren't working as expected anymore, please get in touch with me immediately. Thanks.

Updated several older scripts, here's the major updates:

New Tool for 3ds Max - RenderFlow Beta

6
votes

David Holmedal has written a node based render manager for 3dsmax and is making it available immediately to anyone who is interested ...for free. More information is available on his website http://www.davidholmedal.com/renderflow.php

Description:
RenderFlow is a nodebased render manager. It allows you to setup your
render passes much like you would set up a composite in programs such as
Shake. This gives you a clear overview of what is going on in the scene. It
is easy to use, you decide the complexity as you go along.

May has come and is nearly gone but is a special month for ScriptSpot - this is the 9th year since ScriptSpot was created. 9 years... Wow. So - what does this mean? Not much this year but I do think next year should be big! I'm thinking everything from competitions to giveaways to a major site refresh. If you've got some ideas or just would like to help out over the coming year shoot me an email or leave a comment below.

(Copied from Neil Blevins' email list)

Updated several older scripts, here's the major updates:

splinePainter: Added ability to close the spline after creation.
sLib: Added sLibPowerNurbsFilter.
powerSolidManager: Also works on Power Nurbs now.
parameterManager: Added a progress bar to startup, hopefully it'll build it's list a little faster, or at least you'll know it hasn't crashed. Fixed a couple of crash bugs.
modifierUtilities: Changed the default modifiers. You can get the old set back by making your own custom set of default modifiers.
wireBundler: Modified the parameters of SplineMesher to create more consistent results.

Major flaw revealed in Internet Explorer; users urged to switch

5

This isn't particularly related to 3ds Max but there is (I've heard a patch may have already gone out) a very serious IE vulnerability that can allow any saved passwords to be stolen by a malicious website. According to the article - security pro's a recommending switching browsers (at least for the time being) to one of the alternatives such as Firefox or Google Chrome.

saving only visible object

5

Hello
I'm thinking about a script to save only objects displayed in the camera field (like "save selection" but for the camera viewport)
the goal is to make my huge architecturals scene easier to render, because sometimes i just want to render a part of the project (my camera field) and not the total scene,i think this could make my render faster
I'm working on it, so if you have suggestion or if a similar script already exists, please tell me !
(Sorry for my poor english, i'm french! )
