Quad Cylinder

17 votes

Since I've written a few functions to make my life easier while working on the Gear primitive (plus one that I later discarded, intended to fill holes), I figured I could just as well make a quad cylinder as a much simpler example how to tie these functions together. Enjoy and feel free to rip the code apart and reuse it.

Helical Cylinder

Example usage would be spiral ductwork, screw threads, flexible metal tubes, circular ramps etc. No smoothing groups are assigned, for smooth look either use Smooth modifier or add points to the spline profile.

SpiroTube

Creates a cylindrical mesh, created around a series of X, Y and Z positions which are defined by 3 different functions. The functions can be easily changed using 7 variables (Segments, M, N, P, Q, H and T) which are all spinners.

Cylindrify modifier

Cylindrify is similar to the Spherify modifier, except that it works only in the local XY plane instead of the 3 dimensions.

Primitives Default Override

If like me you constantly zero out the segments of planes, cylinders and other tubes and cones you create, this script is for you.
It replaces the primitives creation macroscripts shipping with 3dsMax so that :
Cylinders, Tubes and Cones : Height Segments = 1, Sides = 16 (18 is only symmetrical on one axis)
Planes segments = 1x1
Teapot segments = 8 (as suggested by a good friend of mine ; this Teapot deserves a face lift)

I recommend putting it in the following location so that it overrides the one in the max root folder :
