V-RayMtl Converter  - the very useful professional tool for automating such a time-consuming process as converting of materials, maps, lights, cameras, proxy, modifiers etc. from different renderer engines (currently supported: Scanline (Standard), Raytrace, Autodesk Material, Architectural, mrArch&Design, Physical Material, Corona, NVIDIA iray (unofficial), fr-Advanced, Brazil Advanced) to V-Ray, as well as to reverse the conversion of V-Ray materials to Standard materials (which is very useful for game developers, 3d modelers, etc).

About conversion:

None of the existing converters can provide 100% accuracy of the conversion due to the fact that the principle of the different renderer engines differs, and sometimes differs significantly. In this regard, the physical parameters of materials are also significantly different. But despite these differences, we tried to achieve the maximum possible accuracy of the conversion, which the our plugin provides an average of 90-98%

V-RayMtl Converter converts the source materials into other specified material with the maximum possible preservation of the basic properties of the material, such as diffuse, specular, opacity (including filter), glossiness, roughness, bump, displacement,  selfillumination (emission), translucency, reflection, refraction. Also, all the textures that are used for the above parameters are saved. As for special procedural maps, they are converted only if there is an analogue. Otherwise, procedural maps are baked into textures or removed if the resulting materials can be used without them.

IMPORTANT: To convert materials between different renderers, it is imperative that you have these renderers on your system.



Process of installing the "V-RayMtl Converter 3" is very simple and does not require any special knowledge.
After downloading the archive you need to unzup the VrayMtlConverter3.mzp file, run 3ds Max, go to Main Menu->MAXScript->Run Script... and select VrayMtlConverter3.mzp file (or drag and drop this to any viewport).

After installing you will see "V-RayMtl Converter 3" icon in your Main Toolbar:

You can move this button to any place convenient for you or assign "hot keys" for run this script. To do this, just open [Customize UI] settings, select [3DZverTools] in the [Category] drop-down list, below in [Action] list you will see [V-RayMtl Converter 3]

3DS Max 2022


Your script is really a nice tool. I switched to Max 2022 but the VRay Mtl Converter doesn't launch. I could execute the mzp with apperently no issue, i even installed the button in my toolbar but nothing happens.
Probably you need an update for Max 2022

  • fixed an issue when converting Physical materials to V-Ray materials.
  • the installer has been rewritten and now the Administrator privileges are not required to install the script.

Script v3.99 stopped to work after recent Windows 10 .NET update

Script v3.99 stopped to work after recent Windows 10 .NET update I installed on 01/12/21. Could you check this, please?

I have other scripts which also stopped to work.

UPDATE: I have installed latest Windows 10 build 20H2 and everything works fine again. Excuse me for the false alarm.

New update v3.998 are available!


  • added batch materials conversion mode for multiple .max files to "Material Conversion" section.
  • added a function to handle possible errors during batch conversion of materials with writing to a temporary log file when they occur.
  • removed some conversion options to V-Ray: enable or disable converting Blend, Shellac and DoubleSided materials. Now these materials are always converted to V-Ray materials by default.
  • some changes have been made to the UI in the "Material Conversion" section for a more comfortable perception.

"V-RayMtl Converter 3" updated to v3.997:

  • added option "Convert Bitmap to VRayBitmap" in the "Material Conversion" section. If enabled, converts all standard bitmaps used in the specified material to VRayBitmap. Otherwise, all standard bitmaps will remain unchanged.
  • added "All Scene Bitmaps to VRayBitmap" option in the "Advanced Conversion" section for converting all standard bitmaps in the current scene (including those used in materials, modifiers, render settings, environment, etc.) to VRayBitmap.
  • removed "Convert CoronaBitmap to VRayBitmap" option from "Material Conversion" section. CoronaBitmap is now always converted to VRayBitmap by default.
  • added automatic saving of options settings for the "Advanced Fix" section when closing the script.
  • optimized internal code for more stable and faster work.

"V-RayMtl Converter 3" updated to v3.996:

- added transfer of Diffuse color animation keys from source material to target material (currently support for Standard, Raytrace, Architectural, CoronaMtl, CoronaLightMtl, VrayMtl and VrayLightMtl)
- fix gamma handling when converting CoronaBitmap texturemap to VrayBitmap (VrayHDRI)
- optimized loading of script and added loading bar
- improved handling of unexpected errors that may occur during material conversion

Your statements are unproven.

Give please examples of incorrect conversion Blend material to VRayBlendMtl.
Most likely you are using a hacked version that walks on pirated sites? But does anyone need to explain what the use of hacked software is fraught with ;)
None of the existing converters can provide you with 100% conversion accuracy (maximum 50%), but V-RayMtl Converter guarantees at least 90% conversion accuracy for all supported materials..

no even 50%

Useless for us. The blend amounts of Vray Blend Materials are wrong. This tool does not offer a 100% solution. Corona 5 -> Vray 3.6
