Outliner

2.1.5
Date Updated:

The Outliner 2.0 is a fast and easy to use scene management tool. It has a wide range of features, including selecting, hiding, freezing, linking and grouping objects in the "Hierarchy Mode". In the "Layer Mode" you can organize your scene by dragging&dropping objects from one layer to the other. What's more, the Outliner offers support for nested layers, to manage scenes more efficiently. The interface is nimble enough to keep it open constantly.

Additional Info:

Compared to the previous version (1.6.1), there are many improvements. Most notable among them are: hugely increased performance, improved stability, nested layer support and many small tweaks to improve the ease of use. For a list of all changes, click here

This is also in reply to the previous comment about the Outliner apparently not updating:
I haven't been able to replicate this specific issue (i.e. it not updating from the get go), but I have found some situations when it does consistently happen for me.

A little while back I've literally spent a day and a half chasing this issue. It has been a very elusive bug somewhere in the treeview sorting and drawing/updating. So although I have been able to narrow the problem down, I have been unable to fix it within a reasonable amount of time.
As part of the plugin rewrite I'm also rewriting the treeview implementation, and hopefully this will make this particular issue a thing of the past. Meanwhile, sorry for the inconveniance.

Object propegation

Hey,

Thanks for the great script.

There seems to be an issue with objects not being added to Outliner on creation (not sure if this has been brought up before).

I have Outliner docked to the left hand side of Max, and set to start up with Max.

The problem is, for newly created items to show up in the Outliner, I have to press H to close it, then H again to open it. This defeats the purpose of having it open on start up.

Is there any way to make the items update in Outliner as they're created?

Cheers.

I've put up a new blog post with the conclusions from the pricing poll: http://script.threesixty.nl/outliner/index.php/blog/2012/02/pricing-poll...

Poll

It looks like there was a bug in the poll module, which I think I have fixed now.
So if you tried to vote and it didn't work, please give it another try. Also, if you haven't voted yet, please do so here:

Poll

I've put up a little poll on the website regarding price ranges for a potential new version of the Outliner. It would be a complete rewrite of the script to become a plugin. This brings a lot of benefits, mainly in terms of performance. But of course it does take a lot of time and effort to do, so I'm considering asking a small price for a 3.0 version.

To give me an idea of the kind of price that you would think reasonable, please answer the poll:

Because it is a script, not a plugin. I've already optimized a great deal, and the performance now is just something you'll have to live with I'm afraid.

For anyone else who has this problem: check the "drag&drop mousebutton" setting in the Options dialog to make sure it is set to the button you've expected it to be.

It seems that this is a nitrous bug; the other display modes don't seem to work either for layers. There's not much I can do about that. You should let Autodesk know about it, and hopefully they'll fix it.
