Outliner

2.1.5
Date Updated:

The Outliner 2.0 is a fast and easy to use scene management tool. It has a wide range of features, including selecting, hiding, freezing, linking and grouping objects in the "Hierarchy Mode". In the "Layer Mode" you can organize your scene by dragging&dropping objects from one layer to the other. What's more, the Outliner offers support for nested layers, to manage scenes more efficiently. The interface is nimble enough to keep it open constantly.

Additional Info:

Compared to the previous version (1.6.1), there are many improvements. Most notable among them are: hugely increased performance, improved stability, nested layer support and many small tweaks to improve the ease of use. For a list of all changes, click here

Drag&Drop between layers is

Drag&Drop between layers is definitely supported, and should work just fine.

Im giving this script 8.9/10

Im giving this script 8.9/10 point..... athough I dont use it very much, but after giving it a try, I just know that this tool should be used in the future 3dsMax (Selection in 3dsMax now suck (UI more than function), layer manager more over, no improvement after critized many years).

a little suggest from the noob like me : in Layer manager section, it would be amazing if I can do drag and drop thing ; ex : I had box in layer 1 and want to move it to layer 2, theres no need to for me to use "add selection to....layer xx" function, just select an object and drop it to another layer, I hope you understand my image is.

and many thank for the great script you've made.

1) That would interfere with the behavior for all other nodes (rename or expand).
2) Noted.
3) There's a bit of a problem with this. The context menu will have to go to another button if you want to use right-mb dropdrop, which might become rather confusing...

Hi, thanx for this amazing script!
You know all it benefits better than anyone.

I have a little wish list -

1. ability to make a layer active by double click
2. buttons before layer names for Hide/freeze toggle.
3. drag&drop for right mouse button.

As useful idea see attachment.

Also, has anyone really been far even as decided to use even go want to do look more like?

1) The height is a bug in max2011, the width is a maxscript limitation. Unfortunate, but there's nothing I can do about it.
2) Still not terrible I'd say. Probably just filling the treeview (purely .NET code) takes up most of the time.
3) What kind of functionality related to containers would you want to see?
4) That is not a trifling thing to implement. Not impossible, but not easy either. It'd require an interface to edit them, a way of saving and loading them, etcetera.

Hi, Very nice script. In my

Hi,

Very nice script. In my opinion you've done a better job of a scene explorer tool than what ships with 3ds Max. Here are a few suggestions:

1) - When docking Outliner to the left of the UI, there is no way to resize it to fill the whole height of the viewport, nor is there a way to adjust it's width. You have to undock it, resize it, then re-dock it.

2) - Using it with 2011, I have a scene loaded with about 6000 objects. Performance of Outliner is pretty good except for switching between the objects and layers tabs; there is about a 2 second delay when switching.

3) - Be nice to have Containers support added to the right click menus.

4) - What about the ability to have custom right click menus, kinda like 3ds Max's quad menus?

Again, nicely done!

I've updated the Outliner to

I've updated the Outliner to version 2.0.4. If you have the Outliner installed already, use the "Check now" button in the Options dialog to download and install the latest version.
For a list of changes, see the changelog.

I think some confusion exists

I think some confusion exists here because the filter doesn't take an objects layer hidden state into account (up to now). This will be fixed in the oncoming update (2.0.4).
When this is fixed, all you have to do to see "just the objects in the viewport", is activate the filter and set it to not show hidden objects.
