Outliner

Version:
2.1.5
Date Updated:
09/13/2012

The Outliner 2.0 is a fast and easy to use scene management tool. It has a wide range of features, including selecting, hiding, freezing, linking and grouping objects in the "Hierarchy Mode". In the "Layer Mode" you can organize your scene by dragging&dropping objects from one layer to the other. What's more, the Outliner offers support for nested layers, to manage scenes more efficiently. The interface is nimble enough to keep it open constantly.

Additional Info:

Compared to the previous version (1.6.1), there are many improvements. Most notable among them are: hugely increased performance, improved stability, nested layer support and many small tweaks to improve the ease of use. For a list of all changes, click here

bug merging objects

I have recreated the merge bug in my current file. (please see screenshot) I have just merged "object094" which shows up in max's layer "Resi". That layer (resi) was created in outliner in another file and was nested within Layer "0.Rev09"
Now for some reason in this file. the layer "resi" is absent from outliner altogether. and object094 is nowhere to be seen in layer mode. is does show in "list" mode.
This happens most of th etime I merge objects. Typically i have to select my newly merged objects and create a new layer in outliner so that the object shows up in there.

Bug working with Xref

This is how to recreate the error.
please create a scene with 3 teapots. put tp1 on layer1 tp2 on layer 2 and layer 2 inside layer1. tp3 stays on layer0
create xref with tp1 and 2 and you get a cyclic redundancy error. if not, just change somethign in the xref'd scene and reload in the master file and then the error applies.

Generraly, when I merge files in my scene. the scene becomes unstable. and some layers don't show up until I restart max and reload the scene. not sure if this is related.

Many thanks for an otherwise fantastic tool!

Yes, this is inherent in the way max layers work. An object is hidden if its layer is hidden OR if it is hidden itself. So if you'd want to unhide an object that has been hidden by its layer, you'd have to unhide the layer. I suppose this could be done automatically (or with a popup, but that might be annoying), but that could mean that you will unhide more objects than you intend to. Another approach could be that when unhiding an object that is hidden by its layer, it'd unhide the layer and hide all objects that were not selected. But that doesn't sound ideal either.
What do you think?

I've noticed that if you have a layer hidden, you cannot unhide specific items within that layer using the lightbulb icons. There are workarounds, of course, but this feels like a limitation that shouldn't be there.

issue resolved, kinda...

My filter button was on. So the missing "+" was totally user error. One I turned off the filter they returned. Everything also starting acting normally as well. (layer assignments). I will try to recreate and record what I was experiencing with filters ON. Perhaps they are related. It may take me a bit (tomorrow) as I'm near the end of my day here....

That's very curious. Could you describe a step-by-step way to reproduce the assignment issue?
As for the Outliner not showing the + expand buttons, are you sure the filters aren't hiding the objects on the layers?

Random layer re-assignment

I've noticed in 2012 that the "right click" layer assignment method is randomly re-assigning objects in layers to other layers. Its not doing it to objects on Layer 0. Its also no showing the "+" indicators on the layers. There are 600+ objects in the scene. I never saw this in 2011.

Here is a jing screen grab of the layer manager compared to Outliner.
