Outliner

Version:
2.1.5
Date Updated:

The Outliner 2.0 is a fast and easy to use scene management tool. It has a wide range of features, including selecting, hiding, freezing, linking and grouping objects in the "Hierarchy Mode". In the "Layer Mode" you can organize your scene by dragging&dropping objects from one layer to the other. What's more, the Outliner offers support for nested layers, to manage scenes more efficiently. The interface is nimble enough to keep it open constantly.

Additional Info:

Compared to the previous version (1.6.1), there are many improvements. Most notable among them are: hugely increased performance, improved stability, nested layer support and many small tweaks to improve the ease of use. For a list of all changes, click here

3ds Max 2010

Ok. The viewport issues you mentioned, could you describe them?
As for the instability: can you trace it to specific actions other than saving the scene?
If you have a particular scene that demonstrates the issues, could you perhaps share it with me, so I can look into it?

RE:First question is of course:

My problems have stopped since I moved my objects to simple layers instead of layers inside layers, so it looks like a proof to me.

I have thought about going in

I have thought about going in that direction at some point, yes. There are a quite a few render pass managers out there already though of course. Are there any specific features or 'workflows' that you'd like to see which aren't available in currently available tools?
And which high-level features would you expect it to implement?

Outliner-esque Render Pass Manager

Any plans to make a render pass manager that works in Outliner? I'd be GLAD to pay for that!!!!

First question is of course:

First question is of course: are you sure this is due to the Outliner?

Problems with outliner

Hi, some people in my work team have been using the outliner on our current project and it caused some big troubles in the production.
Our troubles started when my mate started using nested layers. 3ds max began to freeze more often than usually, generally these freezes lead to a crash of the application. Some viewport issues started to appear too (I really don't see how it could be related to layers, but since I have cleared nested layers the problems disappeared). Big problems when saving files : very often 3ds max crashes.
We are using 3ds max 2010 and we have quite heavy scenes filled with containers.
Hope this is usefull.

Render Farm Issues

Yah, I'd get rid of it. Less hassles. thnx again for a great tool!

Could it be that these were

Could it be that these were old scenes causing the messageboxes? After running the "remove nested layer warning" and saving the scene, the messageboxes should never come back.
I'm thinking of getting rid of the entire 'feature' for the next major version actually. It's still doing more harm than good it'd seem...

Render Farm Issues

When using the Outliner script with Deadline, we get pop-up errors. When we disable the nested layer warning in the options, we still get errors. We end up having to run the "remove nested layer warning" script you provide. Is there a better/easier way to not get these errors. I dont want the whole team to have to remember to run that utility script. Thanks for a great script btw!
